Our patients come first
The Mayfield Clinic has a rich heritage of helping patients suffering from spinal disorders ranging from the very simple to the very complex. That is why more spine patients are referred to Mayfield than any other surgical practice in the Midwest. Whether you have come to us with a complex fracture or more common back problems, we address your situation with skill, care and a sense of urgency. It’s a treatment process we call Priority Consult®.

Nearly 80 percent of our patients are able to recover with nonsurgical treatment. With Priority Consult®, our surgeons provide a rapid review of your medical condition within a few days ... not weeks.

If the neurosurgeon believes you will benefit from treatment before an appointment, your treatment will begin immediately. You will also receive assistance from our experienced team of registered nurses.

How Priority Consult® works
Once your physician refers you to us, we will contact you to obtain a detailed medical history. The surgeon will use this information to help determine whether you need to do anything before your office visit. If you have had a recent x-ray, MRI scan, or CT scan of your spine, we will obtain those, or ask you to drop them off at our office. Your surgeon will review your films and medical information, and we will call you with his recommendation within a few days. In his recommendation, the surgeon may ask to see you first, or he may ask that you see one of our rehabilitation physicians. Physical therapy with one of our network therapists also may be recommended. Our office should contact you with your surgeon’s opinion and a treatment plan within five business days of receiving your medical history and films (if films are available).

Personalized coordination of your care.
If the surgeon recommends therapy, the Care Coordinator, a registered nurse with experience in assisting patients with spine diagnosis, will call you with educational information and will help coordinate your treatment and therapy. Your surgeon will keep your referring physician informed of your progress. We also will maintain communication with you to ensure your total satisfaction with Mayfield.
